I’ve noticed there’s been a lot of concern in our community about the possibility of property taxes increasing, so I wanted to share a few South Dakota property tax programs that may help homeowners save money.
🏡 1. Verify your property is classified as Owner-Occupied.
If you live in the home you own, contact your local Department of Equalization and ask if your property is receiving the Owner-Occupied tax rate. Owner-occupied homes are not subject to the school district general education levy, while investment or rental properties are. If your property isn’t classified correctly, correcting it could reduce your property taxes.
🇺🇸 2. Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption.
Qualifying disabled veterans may be eligible for up to a $150,000 reduction in the assessed value of their home. Contact your local Department of Equalization to learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
♿ 3. Property Tax Relief for Qualifying Paraplegic Homeowners.
South Dakota provides property tax relief for qualifying paraplegic homeowners who meet the eligibility requirements. Contact your local Department of Equalization for more information.
👵 4. Assessment Freeze for Seniors and Disabled Individuals.
Homeowners who are 65 or older or who meet certain disability requirements may qualify for South Dakota’s Assessment Freeze Program if they meet the income and residency requirements. If approved, the assessed value of your home is frozen, which may help limit future increases caused by rising assessments.
💰 5. Other Property Tax Relief Programs May Be Available.
Depending on your age, income, disability status, veteran status, and other circumstances, you may qualify for additional property tax relief programs. It is worth making a call to your local Department of Equalization to find out what options are available to you.
With concerns about rising costs, don’t assume there is nothing you can do. A simple phone call could help you discover a program that saves you money.
